For the longest time, there was a mix of the most famous Seattle area musical acts playing on loop at the International Fountain at teh Seattle Center.

Now, Seattle takes it a step further with their program called OnHold where they offer local artist’s as the hold music for those waiting to get a hold of a human when calling city offices.

The best part is that they offer a podcast of the OnHold mixes.

The City of Seattle now offers podcasts of the entire music program available OnHold. You can subscribe to receive updates (learn how below) each time a new OnHold mix is podcast and access previous podcasts from the archive.

OnHold is the first municipally hosted podcast dedicated to showcasing local musicians and giving back to the community. Each time a new OnHold podcast is released previous podcasts will be archived to create a one of a kind Seattle music database.

It’s the small things like this that make me glad to live in a progressive city.

The festival is March 15-19, while the whole SXSW experience goes from March 10-19.

SXSW is a music, film, and interactive media conference with a HUGE festival of music. For those in Seattle, think Bumbershoot on meth. It’s held in Austin, and one of these years when the girls get older, I plan to take them. They both have a great love for listening to AND playing music. I think it’d be a great experience once they’re old enough to get them a pass to the conference as well.

Last year they put up a bitTorrent file of all the 700 some odd mp3 files that playing musicians submitted. They say they plan to do so again this year as well. I found a lot of great artists this way last year and plan to give it a shot this year as well. I’ll let you know the details once they come out.

Did you know that iTunes offers free music? Every week they have a Song of the Week (SOTW) which is offered up for free.

I used to track the SOTW pretty religiously. Lately though (read the past 8 months) I’ve been forgetting to check it out. That’s a shame, as they feature some pretty good music there.

I decided that to really remember I needed a more daily visual reminder to go and check it out. I have my blog as one of my homepage tabs in Firefox, so I see it every day. I added a graphical affiliate link to the iTunes music store using their nifty SOTW rotating graphic. It’s that albumy looking graphic in my blog’s header. See it up there?

I’m not sure exactly how accurate it is, as right now it shows “The Magic Numbers” as SOTW, but the treu SOTW is actually by “Zack Hexum”. Maybe it shows a preview? Hopefully it will rotate for me. We’ll have to see how things go as time goes by.

So, if you visit my blog and use the iTunes music store, hit up that link for free music. Last September I found the single “Someday” by “Flipsyde”. It’s that song being used in the Olymipcs’ music video/commercial. It’s still one of my favorite 5 star rated songs.
It’s a great way to find new music (as is Pandora, but that’s a post for a different day…)

I registered for (and subsequently released my seat due to inability to attend) BloggerCon III. It’s a shame I couldn’t make it.

As part of the process, Dave Winer produced a BloggerCon III Blogroll. This is a trend for newer technology conferences and is a great idea. I’m all for them.

However, if you follow the link attached to my blog’s name on his blogroll, it does not go to my blog. It goes to a page on HIS worldoutline.com site with MY blog’s content displayed.

The attribution on that page is weak at best. Yes, the permalinks to the articles displayed do go to my site, but the content has little to no attribution to me or my site.

So Dave, I ask you here in public; why are you stealing my content?

CURRENT STATS: 6d 7:45 smoke-free, 52 cigs not smoked, $13.65 saved, 4:20 life saved

I’m on day 5 of quit number five. I’ve had a few transgressions, but I need to realize these are normal and a part of giving up for good. I had 3 cigarettes on Sunday, but that was after no patch on Saturday OR Sunday.

My mood is fairly grumpy and quite tired. I was doing the twitch and clench last night at home. Decided not to go for a walk with Aileen and Kelsey as I had a huge urge when they left and I used to smoke when I walked to the store or bus stop alone. Just want to take a bit to break the cycle.

I’m still wearing Monday’s patch. I need to get around to changing it soon. I ahd really weird dreams last night and slept very fitfully. Getting more tired a this whole thing goes along.

This week I need to set my quit goals/rewards so I stay on track.

—

Day number 7. I’m starting to feel a lot better now. I could have sworn I had Tourette’s Tuesday night. I had major tweaks, twitches, exclamations, etc. It really rocked me hard. I’m still having trouble concentrating, but it’s getting much better. I’ve been without the patch for the past two days and have not transgressed. Although I wanted to Tuesday night- I rode a new bus (75) that it seems turns into another one (330) every five runs or so. I ended up 40 blocks away from home and decided to walk it. That was HARD. I kept craving the whole time. Last night I walked home from Northgate via Bestbuy/Quiznos instead of dropping off 2 blocks from home. Not quite as long of a walk, but still 15 minutes. Tonight I’m stopping off at U-Village for a Jamba Juice. Aileen and Kelsey will meet me at the playground. More in a couple of days…

No there, is no scientific generation i, I made it up after a realization tonight. The masses that are growing up now are growing up more in tune with a new corporate culture than any other generation.

The proliferation of iPods has propelled Apple back onto the map. Even if they never gain desktop or business workstation market share, they have forever changed teh way that the world listens to music.

iPods have outsold Sony’s walkman numbers by laughable amounts. iTunes is profitable. iPhoto, iChat, iThis, iThat. We’re surrounded by the new MAC culture. They are bringing the convergent home to reality. Others are helping out and doing the same, but none have been as successful or innovative about it as Apple.

How did I realize all this? When while going to free scoop day, my 2.5 year old daughter turned to me and yelped (yes yelped!) with glee, “DADDY, DADDY, LOOK!!! I WANNA GO IN THE APPLE STORE!!!” Not only did she recognize the store itself from the outside, she knew what it was, and here’s the killer - what awaited her inside. And she was so enamored by past visits that she wanted, no HAD to go back in again.

As we passed the tables of iPods, she immediatley points and says, “look mommy, like daddy’s!.” She doesnt skip a beat and heads straight for the center table in the back by the theater and sits down on the black ball in front of a slick iMac and starts drawing. After a while, we ask her to come along and she just tells us, “no, I’m working.”

Guess it’s time to get her a WACOM tablet eh??
