145 - Firefox Tip – Multiple Homepage Tabs

I referred to this tip in my last post and wanted to elaborate on it.  I use Firefox daily as my main browser of choice.  I do float over to Safari and IE for UI testing, but FF gets the brunt of my use.  There are about a dozen sites I check on a daily basis (iStockPhoto.com, DPChallenge, LinkedIn, etc…).  I would forget to go check them out daily if I didn’t use this tip.

In FF, you can set more than one tab to automatically appear as your homepage when you open the browser (or hit the home button).  There are two ways to add new homepage tabs:
1) Close all tabs and hit the the Home Button (By default it’s just to the right of the stop button – it looks like a house).  This will open your current homepage configuration.  Open a new tab and browse to the additional site you want as your homepage. Lather Rinse Repeat.  When you’re done, choose Preferences and then General.  Choose the “Use current pages” link and click OK.
2) Choose Preferences and find the text input box that has your current page(s) set in it.  Go to the end.  Add a pipe (”|” – but w/o the quotes) and then copy the new URL in after it.  Click OK.

You now have multple tabs as your homepage.

144 - iTunes Song of the Week – Free Music Reminder

Did you know that iTunes offers free music?  Every week they have a Song of the Week (SOTW) which is offered up for free.

I used to track the SOTW pretty religiously.  Lately though (read the past 8 months) I’ve been forgetting to check it out. That’s a shame, as they feature some pretty good music there.

I decided that to really remember I needed a more daily visual reminder to go and check it out.  I have my blog as one of my homepage tabs in Firefox, so I see it every day.  I added a graphical affiliate link to the iTunes music store using their nifty SOTW rotating graphic.  It’s that albumy looking graphic in my blog’s header.  See it up there?

I’m not sure exactly how accurate it is, as right now it shows “The Magic Numbers” as SOTW, but the treu SOTW is actually by “Zack Hexum”.  Maybe it shows a preview?  Hopefully it will rotate for me.  We’ll have to see how things go as time goes by.

So, if you visit my blog and use the iTunes music store, hit up that link for free music.  Last September I found the single “Someday” by “Flipsyde”.  It’s that song being used in the Olymipcs’ music video/commercial.  It’s still one of my favorite 5 star rated songs.
It’s a great way to find new music (as is Pandora, but that’s a post for a different day…)

142 - Smoke Free for 80 Days

I’m officially smoke free for 80 days now.  No cravings, no urges, no slips.  This might be the time that I make it permanent.  I still feel a bit like crap every now and again, but I think that has more to do with the new commute and sudden switch in waking hours than the lack of dangerous chemicals entering my bloodstream.

141 - iStockPhoto.com Bought by Getty Images

I was trolling my iStockPhoto.com stats and decided to read the latest news on their homepage.  There was a link to an article about things changing with the following excerpt:

In Getty Images, we have found our perfect partner. On February 9, in the early hours of the morning, iStockphoto agreed to join the Getty Images family, functioning independently with the benefits of Getty Images, yet, very importantly for them and us, autonomy. They will nurture and encourage our pioneering spirit so that our entrepreneurial culture will continue to thrive.

It’ll be very interesting to see how these two VERY different stock photography business models mesh.

139 - No Glove for the Seahawks

I am SO tired of hearing all the whining about the bad officiating during the Super Bowl. There were a few truly horrid calls (Hasselback didn’t block below the knees, he TACKLED.)

Anyway, I posit that it wasn’t the refs fault, but our team’s apparel department.

Ask any college or NFL referee, and they’ll tell you that EVERY play can have a penalty called on it. If one actually is called is more a result of how obvious the player is when committing the penalty.

How the HECK could the refs not notice the NEON GREEN GLOVES!! Come on! The players got called for so many penalties because they could be SEEN committing them.

May I suggest to the geniuses that made that decision to think a little bit about it next time and maybe use a color a little less obvious. Please?

138 - Almost There (Sorry, but Eden Mor Has Left the Site.)

So I got most of the hacks I remember writing copied over to the new site, which is once again looking like it used to thanks to the “Classic” theme.

Unfortuantely, I don’t yet have any of the old comments copied over.  I’m still not sure I have the time right now to work on that. My sincerest apolgoies to those who took the time to comment – I do appreciate it.  I’ll see what I can do, but for now we’ll start fresh, OK?
The good comment news is that it looks like the comment spam is going to be a lot easier to control.  The bad news is that I no longer have the comment spam to bring all those Eden Mor searchers to my site.

SO, for the benefit of all those Eden Mor fans that were visiting my site because they went to the FOURTH page of Google results to find more pics of her, I present the following links from the FIRST page.  Geesh guys, if you’re going to spend that much time looking for pics, go to the sites WITH the pics!!

[THESE LINKS ARE NOT WORK OR FAMILY SAFE]
Eden Mor’s page on the Big Breast Archive
Eden Mor’s site – The Garden of Eden
Eden Mor’s Wikipedia entry

Now that I’m done goofing around and being a traffic whore, I’ll get back to the good old natured posting I used to do.

137 - Things they are a changing…

I moved my webhost and was having some pretty massive issues with my Wordpress 1.2 installation. I’m still waiting to hear back from them, but in the meantime I just installed 2.0.1 I then hand imported my 15 categories and proceeded to import from RSS2 all my old posts. The categories matched, so all is grand!

All my cool customizations and the old style are gone, but I can gradually work on getting those back in. The most important part is getting the ability to post to work again.

If you’re seeing this post, it means I got the mod_rewrite rules working to display the new installation. Yeah!
